Today I’d like to take a bit of a pause from writing about approaches to retirement and reflect a bit on the opportunities we have whether we’re working full-time, part-time or not currently working in the traditional sense.
It strikes me that the question, “Why me?” is often asked in times of hardship, ‘bad luck’ or bad news. When we encounter difficulties or things that change our plans, we ask “Why me?” Or even sometimes, “Why me, Lord?!”
But today, let’s turn this question around and explore it from a perspective of gratitude and positivity for all that we do have.
Because if we’re lucky enough to be focusing on the ‘optimal’ ways to retire…then we’re pretty fortunate indeed.
Why Am I Safe and Healthy?
Each day when I wake up in good health, I am reminded of the incredible gift of life. It’s a blessing to breathe easily, move without pain, and experience the world with all my senses. These gifts allow me to pursue my passions, enjoy the company of loved ones, and contribute to my community. Recognizing that many do not share these privileges fills me with gratitude for the simple yet profound joy of being healthy.
Why Do I Have Opportunities and Financial Means?
Life has afforded me certain opportunities that have shaped my journey. Access to education, supportive mentors, and a stable environment were likely crucial to my growth. These opportunities have opened doors to personal and professional development.
Financial stability, meanwhile, provides the freedom to make choices that align with my values and aspirations, rather than being driven solely by necessity. It’s a privilege to use these means to support my dreams and give back to those in need.
With these blessings comes a sense of responsibility. My good fortune is not just for my own benefit—I may be in a position to make a positive impact on others’ lives.
Gratitude is a powerful practice that helps us appreciate the abundance in our lives. It’s about recognizing the small miracles that occur every day and being thankful for them. This gratitude fuels a desire to share our blessings and create a ripple effect of kindness and compassion.
“Why me?” can be a question filled with awe and appreciation. It is a reminder to reflect on our gifts and to use them wisely. By embracing our blessings with gratitude and a sense of responsibility, we can make a meaningful difference in our lives and the lives of others.
Today, look at the people around you who care for you and all that you have and ask, “Why me?”
